My husband and I (as I mentioned in my last post) have two wonderful Pit Bull dogs, Hannah (to the right) a 60 lb pure bred and Diesel (below), a 87 lb mix of Pit Bull and Rhodesian Ridgeback. I love to bring this to people's attention because I think they get a very bad rap!
When we adopted Diesel he was only three months old. He had been chained in a yard, had never been taken on a walk and his harness had to be surgically removed from his skin. If he hadn't been seized by animal control, he would have grown up to be a fighting dog, like his parents that had to be euthanized. Hannah was a stray from our local Humane Society Shelter. Despite their less than optimum beginnings, our dogs are two of the most mild mannered, people friendly dogs I know. They actually think they are lap dogs.
Pit Bulls make wonderfully gentle and loyal pets. Even many that have previously been used for fighting, like the ones kept at Michael Vick's home, are able to be rehabilitated and adopted out to good families. Check out this link to the wonderful story in the Washington Post about all of the dogs that were able to be saved from Michael Vick's fighting ring! For once a Judge decided not to impose a sentence on the hype surrounding the breed and made rescuers evaluate each dog as the precious individual that it is.
